A perimeter fence constructed of concrete posts and barbed wire was built around the site in 1969, and has undergone regular maintenance and repairs. In 2008, an entrance arch was erected over the main road leading into the ruins. The cuneiform inscription near the top of the arch translates as ‘The Ancient City of Ur.’
In 2009, a security entrance gate and two metal living trailers were constructed just east of the arch, along with four metal guard towers that were placed at the four corners of the site. The towers are manned by Antiquities Police forces year round.
