West Harbor

During his eighth season, Woolley identified a harbor on the outer city walls located just west of the EM Site. The harbor was roughly in the shape of a rectangle and measured approximately 105 meters in either direction with an entrance 9 meters wide that spilled into a large canal. The harbor walls and banks were similar in construction to the city walls. There was evidence of a wharf constructed of baked brick pavement located along the walls, as well as the remains of a few Achaemenid graves and associated buildings. The basin of the harbor was almost fully silted over and covered with sand by the time he located it, and it was therefore difficult to establish full details and a history of the ruins.
